Philips and Deliscious Develop Method for Growing Lettuce Using LED Lighting

Philips and horticulture company Deliscious have developed a method for growing lettuce by using LED lighting. After over a year of testing, Deliscious and Philips were able to find the right recipe for growing a single layer with different light levels and spectrum for the propagation of clod lettuce without daylight. The companies hope to work together to develop a special climate chamber in which small lettuce plants will grow above each other in layers under LED’s whose light spectrum has been adjusted to make the plants grow better. Internal logistic and climate control will have to be developed further for the still to be built multiple layer climate cell. With the correct lighting Deliscious can produce perfect crops of lettuce with roots throughout the year. Deliscious expects to have the new climate chambers ready for growing in 2012.

“This is the first real harbinger of ‘cityfarming’, a new and sustainable concept that’s being used in more and more densely populated areas to grow food in unusual places, such as on terraces and roofs. Taking into account the increasing urbanisation and the need to provide food, this innovation ensures optimal use of the growing surface,” said Udo van Slooten. Director of LED Horticulture at Philips. “Space, water and energy are growing scarcer and that’s why we’re working on sustainable growing methods. The multiple layer cultivation, such as is used at Deliscious, is ground breaking and an example for the future.”

LED street lights saving serious cash in Seattle

The city of Seattle has installed thousands of LED street lights and is reaping the benefits in terms of hundreds of thousands of dollars of savings.

LED street lights in the city of Seattle, WA, are already saving $300,000 a year, according to city representatives. And the Seattle City Light utility is working to install tens of thousands more, says City Council-member Bruce Harrell and City Light Superintendent Jorge Carrasco.

Once a total of 41,000 lights are installed, by the end of 2014, they are expected to cut operating costs by $2.4 million a year.

City Light installed 6,000 lights last year between the Ship Canal and North 65th Street. The utility has started work on the second phase of installing LED street lights throughout the residential neighborhoods in its service territory. Contractors will install 12,000 LED street lights this year from North 65th Street to the north end of City Light’s service territory.

“In today’s challenging economy, it’s important that we look for every opportunity to stretch every dollar as far as it can go,” Harrell said. “Our new LED street lights are reducing energy and maintenance costs while providing better, more reliable lighting.”

Carrasco said that the LED street lights installed in 2010 are performing even better than expected. “We anticipated a 40 percent reduction in energy consumption. Their actual electricity use is 48 percent less than the high-pressure sodium lights they replaced,” he explained.

The most obvious aspect of the changeover is the color of the light, which has gone from an amber tint to a whiter light described as being “comparable to moonlight.” Importantly, the whiter light provides truer color representation, more depth of field and greater peripheral vision, which improves safety for drivers, pedestrians.

The city and utility say that the lights are supported by Seattle police, while satisfaction surveys have found that 85 percent of Seattle residents living in participating pilot areas approve of the new lights. City Light has received complaints on only 2 percent of the installations thus far.

Success from the early installations has encouraged City Light to look for additional opportunities to use LED street lights. The utility plans to test the lights on arterial streets this year.

City Light also is investigating technology that would provide remote controls to dim or brighten the lights to meet the needs of changing traffic patterns – more light when drivers need it in heavy traffic, less light when fewer cars are on the road to reduce the impact on residents and increase energy savings.

Seattle City Light is the 10th largest public electric utility in the United States, and provides “reliable, renewable and environmentally-responsible power” to nearly 1 million Seattle area residents. City Light has been greenhouse-gas-neutral since 2005.

Osram Opto Semiconductors Adds to its TopLED Black Series Portfolio

Osram Opto Semiconductors has added blue green and orange to the previously available red and yellow to its TopLED Black series LEDs. In addition to adding the three new colors to the 60 degree beam angle TopLED Black series, the company is now offering all five colors with a 30° beam angle. “This means that we have the broadest portfolio of ‘black’ LEDs on the market and can cover a wide range of applications,” said Product Manager Sven Weber.

The company says that the LEDs are particularly suitable for monochromatic and multicolor displays, such as those in electronic road signs, travel information displays, parking control systems and price information pillars at gas stations. The most suitable beam angle for each of these applications depends on the distance from the viewer and on local conditions. On straight roads the LEDs with a 30° beam angle are reportedly ideal. Whereas the company says that the versions with a 60° beam angle are better for the curves on entrances to and exits from highways, for gas stations, and for bus destination displays. The orange LED versions are intended for pedestrian lights in America and Japan.

The completely black package of the TopLED Black Series reportedly reduces reflections. The LEDs also offer high contrast so the displays have good legibility in all lighting conditions. The 30 degree version of the green LED offers the highest luminance available at present of 7 cd at an operating current of 20 mA.

The company says that as SMT components the LEDs are suitable for automatic handling and therefore displays can be manufactured at lower cost than with radial LED versions. The company points out that the solder legs compatible with TopLED and Power-TopLED provide flexibility, allowing easy design changes if required. This means that displays can be made with different luminances and beam angles on one and the same circuit board.

Advertising signage from LEDsigns

Advertising and public information can be considered a communication between companies that offer services and products and the potential customers. Through out the years, the means to communicate have evolved from a shout or a sign to complicated technological means like the Internet. Like it or not, signs still have a lot of meaning and they are the basis of the very complex ways of communication. It is useful as it can reach a large mount of people and make itself understood by everyone. This is the reason why signs are everywhere around us in our everyday life.

Advertising can be done in many different ways and the use of signage is just one of them. It’s easy, simple and cheap and it gets the job done. Big signs made of LED strings can be placed on buildings or in public places increasing the popularity of a service or product. This is very effective because the cost is very low and the outcome is good. People have the tendency to respond better to simple things they can see everyday, like a LED sign and this type of signage shouldn’t be considered out of fashion because its popularity is incontestable and the results are even better than they were when it first appeared.

New super bright LED light source from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors: OSTAR Lighting breaks the 1000 lumen barrier

With its new version of OSTAR Lighting, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors presents its first cold white LED to achieve more than 1000 lumen. This means it is brighter than a 50 W halogen lamp, making it ideal for a wide range of applications in the general lighting sector. Samples of the new OSTAR Lighting LED will be produced in the next three months. Market launch is planned for summer 2007.

The new LED light source is based on well established components, which means that progress from the development stage to the production stage will be rapid. The enormous increase in brightness is the result of major improvements to the overall system of chip and package.

The high-flux LED is equipped with six closely packed 1 mm² high-power chips. This high chip packing density leads to a high luminance. What this means in actual practice is that a single OSTAR Lighting with a 38° reflector is all that is needed to illuminate a desk with more than 500 lux from a height of two meters. OSTAR is also settings new standards in efficiency, producing 75 lm/W from an operating current of 350 mA.

The new OSTAR Lighting LED was developed as part of the BMBF NanoLux program.
